Low Risk but Hard Reach: Recruiting US Students
The US student market offers UK universities something increasingly valuable: stability. It's one of the few international markets still showing steady year-on-year growth for UK universities, with low visa risk and a large share of self-funded students.
But reaching American students is hard, to say the least.
Most international students choose to study abroad out of need: for access to research, industry connections, a degree their home country can't offer. American students don't have that problem. Choice, quality, and opportunity already exist at home, in abundance. So when an American student chooses the UK, it isn't need driving the decision. It's want. A want for something different, something bigger, something that stretches beyond the familiar path already laid out for them.
For the right student, the UK means something a domestic option can't: a genuine fresh start, a new environment, a global outlook, and the chance to build a life bigger than the one they'd imagined at home. That want is real. The challenge is finding these students, earning their attention, and holding it well past the application.
Combine that with the sheer size of the US: thousands of universities to choose from, education systems that shift from state to state, more than 20,000 high schools and community colleges to reach, no domestic agent infrastructure, and little direct insight or access for recruiting here at scale. The result is a student who decides differently, in a landscape that's nearly impossible to navigate from the outside.
Growing here takes more than activity. It takes understanding how the market actually works, how American students really decide, and how to get in front of the right students with the right message: a strategy, a position, and a plan built around the realities of this market, not the ones you already know.
